Remodeling a home is exciting and can even be fun, especially when picking out your colors and if you know what to expect ahead of time. That's why we at Zia Design Solutions wrote up this page just for you.
Whether you are new to home remodeling or have done it before, it is normal to have many questions about the process, pricing, and potential issues. Projects vary widely, but we at Zia Design Solutions found that some common questions tend to be universal among homeowners. Understanding these questions and the answers will help ensure you are ready for your home remodeling project, whether a small or complete makeover.
Before you start work on your home, you should ask yourself if it is worth renovating. Also, once you decide to renovate, determine your budget and communicate with the contractor pricing your project.
At Zia Design, we can help you make some of those budgeting decisions. Always include additional money for unexpected or unforeseen expenses.
For you, it is most important before you hire anyone directly on your project, like the architect, interior designer, and other professionals, and even Zia Design Solutions for referrals. Also, it is important to do your own research to check out the companies. The best place for this is at the Better Business Bureau. No matter who you choose to do your work, never hire a contractor to work for you unless they can show that they are fully licensed and insured. Zia Design Solutions Inc is a top bathroom and kitchen design and build contractor, and we carry full liability insurance and are a fully licensed general contractor.
We found that if you search for a contractor online, you will usually find you have more questions than answers. So we thought we would give you a list of questions you will probably be asked.
- Are you ready to hire
- Budgeting and planning
- When would you like this project to be completed?
- Are you flexible on time?
Who do I hire for my home remodeling?
Things to ask the contractor:
One of the most challenging parts of a home renovation is figuring out how much you will have to pay for the whole project. But the contractor can and should be able to provide an estimate for you. But remember that an estimate is just that, an estimate. Sometimes things will cost substantially more than figured. So be prepared to set aside some buffer money.
Construction projects are notorious for taking longer than expected. Rather than being angry when your project doesn't meet its original completion date, you should plan ahead and leave plenty of additional finish time. Also, be aware that adjustments might need to be made by the contractor. A contractor might need to add time to complete the project.
Some people want to ask a contractor if they work on a bid or time and materials basis. For example, coming up with your own cost span will only be realistic if you have done your research. Like saying, I think my project ranges from $X to $Y. Is this realistic? Your cost shouldn't be based on going down to Home Depot and writing down what the materials you like cost. Tile requires, mortal and grout not just the tile and so forth.
Who's responsible for cleaning up the mess a contractor or subcontractor makes?
Zia Design Solutions has a responsible cleanup procedure. During renovation projects, plastic tarps are used to protect areas that are not part of the construction.
Homeowners should always be aware that any renovation will create a certain level of "mess that they will be responsible for cleaning up;
At Zia Design Solutions, we will ensure that the owner's cleanup work remains to a minimum by cleaning up after the work is done.
Most contractors offer various planning and design services and construction. A single company can offer everything from feasibility studies to preconstruction estimates to complete design, engineering, and material selections.
Zia Design Solutions offers all construction services, including construction plans...
Don't try to meet with a contractor without knowing what you want to spend. Discussing budgets is important, especially if you have a specific amount you don't want to exceed. Be sure that the amount of money you want to spend is realistic. Someone wanting to gut and remodel two bathrooms with designer finishes will be expensive. A budget of $5,000 for a bathroom would be unrealistic and probably insufficient to cover the tile cost.
At Zia Design Solutions, while we would like to get every job we write up an estimate on, we have no problems with you calling on multiple contractors. Doing this should help you understand the project's cost so you can consider adjustments to the scope of work if needed.
Another thing to consider is knowing the difference between the words "bid" and "estimate"? Homeowners often use these words interchangeably, but they mean very specific things to contractors.
A bid is a fixed price for a specific scope of work, usually requiring extensive time for a contractor to complete. An estimate can be a loose ballpark cost or a range in a line item of general tasks, or a specific breakdown with all costs transparent.
Estimates are usually associated by a contractor with a disclaimer that says additional costs could occur due to material pricing.
Zia Design Solutions can do the architectural work, or we are always willing to work with an architect that an owner has already hired.
Typically the design process works better if it is handled in-house by the contractor doing the work.
Don't assume anything as what you think and what the contractor thinks can be entirely different.
For permitting, Zia Design handles submitting the design and permitting on all projects unless there are special circumstances.
We can’t stress this enough. You should ensure that the contractor you hire is licensed and insured. Just because someone shows you a license does not mean it is current.
Check with PCCLB, the Pinellas County Licensing Board (https://www.pcclb.com/). In fact, any contractor you hire must show you proof of insurance if asked.
Additionally, any professional contractor should have, at a minimum, liability, Workers' Compensation, and property insurance, and they should have proof of all three if you request to see it. The same goes for any subcontractors the contractor hires. In fact, you should insist upon seeing to it that they are all licensed and insured.
A friend or someone you know can probably tell you how difficult it was to complete a home improvement project they had. Whether remodeling your kitchen, building a home office, or creating the perfect entertainment space, you need a contractor's help.
A contractor is a company or person you hire to provide materials and labor to complete a complex job.
Sub-contractors focus on a specific type of project, like plumbing or tiling, or painting. And in contrast, others will work on any project, regardless of whether they are licensed or not. So as the homeowner, it is your job to ask questions.
For larger projects, a general contractor can serve as a project manager working with other vendors to get all the work done.
Hiring a reliable and trustworthy contractor is one of the most important steps for your project. Hire the right one and relax, knowing your project is in good hands. Hire the wrong one, and you could face many problems, from unfinished work to being sued if workers aren't paid.
Research and gather information.
Search for a contractor's Business Profile at BBB.org for free information on their history of complaints, read customer reviews, and see if they are an Accredited Business. BBB Accredited Businesses commit to upholding BBB's Accreditation Standards, including building trust, advertising honestly, telling the truth, being transparent, honoring their promises, being responsive to their customers, safeguarding privacy, and embodying integrity. Also, search for the name of the company online along with "Complaint," "Review," or "Scam" to find different results. Ask the company if employees and sub-contractors undergo a background check. Are they trained and certified? What identification will they show when they come to your home?
Zia Design Solutions has had an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau for over 12 years.
